Photography Contest Rules & FAQ

Basic Contest Rules
  1. Photos must be taken within 300 feet of the center of Magna Main Street between 9200 West and 8400 West as indicated on the below map.

  2. All classes of photography are permitted including, but not limited to, portrait, architectural, fashion, landscape, wildlife, and photojournalism.

  3. All photos must be original work taken by the entrant. No third party may own or control materials a photo contains. Photos must not infringe upon any intellectual property of another person or entity.

  4. If a person is the subject of a submission photo, the entrant is responsible for obtaining their permission to avoid any privacy infringements.

  5. Photographers retain their rights to entered photos. However, by entering the contest, you grant Salt Lake County and the Lens of Magna Main Photo Contest a royalty-free, perpetual, non-exclusive license to publicly display, distribute, and reproduce entered photos. Please see the Photograph Release for more information.

  6. Photos that contain sexually explicit, nude, obscene, violent or other objectionable or inappropriate content, as determined by the sole discretion of the contest organizers, are ineligible for all categories of the contest.

  7. Basic editing, such as color enrichment, sharpening, toning, the use of filters, and cropping is permitted.

  8. Advanced editing used to create illusions, deceptions, manipulations, and the adding and removing of major elements within the frame is prohibited. Use of AI for photo generation or editing is prohibited. 

  9. Entrants under 18 years of age must have the permission of a parent or guardian. By entering the contest, entrants under 18 years of age signify they have obtained the permission of a parent or guardian.

  10. The Lens of Magna Main reserves the right to disqualify any entry that is deemed inappropriate or does not follow stated contest rules.

  11. The decisions of the judges are final.

  12. The Lens of Magna Main is not responsible for late, illegible, incomplete, lost, or stolen submissions.

  13. Photos must be taken in accordance with federal, state, and local laws.

  14. If any category receives less than five submissions, Lens of Magna Main reserves the right to withhold the awarding of prizes in that category.

  • AMATEUR: For those who participate in photography as a hobby.

  • PROFESSIONAL: For those who earn income as a photographer.

Entry
  • Photograph upload must be JPG, JPEG, or PNG.

  • YOUTH and AMATEUR categories require only digital submissions via the website. These must be less than 15 MB each. 

  • PROFESSIONAL submissions require two parts: digital submission via the website in the same manner as the YOUTH and AMATEUR categories, and ALSO a ¼” gator mounted print with a long side of 20 inches (shorter side may be any length). Drop off for PROFESSIONAL entries will be Wednesday, September 4th from 3:00-7:00 pm at the Webster Center in Magna (8952 W Magna Main Street). Please contact the organizers in advance if you want to submit a photo but cannot drop off during this window.

 

Submissions Deadlines and Restrictions
  • Each participant may submit up to three entries. A separate entry form must be completed for each entry.

  • Entry forms and digital photo submissions must be completed via the website by Wednesday, September 4th at midnight. No submissions will be accepted after this date.

 

Judging Criteria
  • YOUTH, AMATEUR, and PROFESSIONAL photos will be judged on technical merit, composition, impact, and uniqueness.

  • For PEOPLE’S CHOICE, judges will narrow submissions to 20 or less per category. These 20 (or less) will be posted on social media. The winner for each category will be the photo that receives the most votes. Voting will open at 7:00 PM on Friday, September 13th and close two weeks later (7:00 PM on Friday September 27th).

 

Winner Notification
  • Winners, with the exception of PEOPLE’S CHOICE, will be announced at the event on Friday, Sept 13th 2024 7:00-9:00 PM at the Webster Center (8952 W Magna Main St, Magna).

 

Claiming Prize Money
  • Checks will be sent to all winners by October 13th.

 

Judge Feedback
  • Feedback from the judges will be available at the event on Friday, Sept 13th 2024 from 7:00-9:00 PM.

 

PROFESSIONAL Photo Pickup
  • Professional photos, with the exception of the winning photos which will continue to be displayed, will be available for pickup at the Magna Library (2675 S 8950 W, Magna) from Wednesday, September 18th to Sunday, September 22nd. Lens of Magna Main is not responsible for any prints not claimed during that time.

  • Winning photographs will be displayed at the library for one year following the completion of the contest.
